Exercise at home

Dear Jess, I just can’t seem find time to stop at the gym after work. Do you have any suggestions for a home workout? Thanks, JS

dumbbells.jpgThere is quite a bit you can do at home with just a minimal amount of equipment. Without knowing more about your personal fitness goals and current exercise routine, let me just throw out a handful of ideas:

• Get up early and enjoy a walk as the sun comes up. What an invigorating way to start the day!

• An adjustable bench, a set of dumbbells, and a well-secured chin-up bar is all you need for a well-rounded strength training workout.

• You can break up your strength-training workout into 15 minute bouts 5-6 times a week, focusing on a different muscle group(s) each day. Make sure each muscle group gets a recovery period of at least 48 hours.

• Rent a variety of fitness DVDs from cardio-workouts to strength-training to yoga.  Once you find a fitness DVD or two that you really like, buy it…and use it.

• Get a quiet stationary bike and pedal while you watch your favorite TV show…the fall season is just a couple weeks away! Pedal at a higher intensity during commercials.

• Sit down on the floor and stretch while reading a book or magazine.

• Take an evening walk after dinner with a friend or partner. This is a great finish to a full day.

• Explore active weekend options: hiking, biking, skiing…lots of choices.

• Make physical activity part of every day!

Be creative and you will easily achieve your goal of being physically active each day!

Salud-
Jess
